Walkabouts for Schools

  • Tuesdays to Fridays 10h00-14h30

The Gallery's Education staff conduct tours of the permanent and temporary exhibitions for school groups and visitors at no cost. School tours need to be booked a week in advance and confirmed the day before. Subjects for discussion could include the Gallery collection as well as the history of the building.

Guided school group walkabouts need to be booked with the following information at hand: total number of learners, learner's grade and estimated arrival times. Bookings must be made at least a week in advance and confirmed a day before. School groups exceeding fifty will have to be divided into groups of 25. To assist the Gallery staff with control and discipline, educators need to accompany learners.

The Gallery is closed on Mondays. School group walkabouts are conducted between 10h00 and 14h30 from Tuesday to Friday.

School tours must be booked a week in advance and confirmed the day before. Late arrivals will forfeit their bookings  as Gallery staff have full programmes.

Art Classes for Young Adults

Art Classes for Young Adults
Fridays from 14h00 to 16h00
Cost: R60 per month (including materials)

Most Friday afternoons during school terms, the Tatham Art Gallery offers art classes for youth of Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas. Working with permanent and temporary exhibitions helps these emerging artists to extend their basic knowledge of the history and theory of art, and encourages the use of different art media.  Participants are encouraged to attend other Gallery programmes such as the Artists’ Forum, art workshops and Artist-in-Residence programmes.

Artists' Forum

Artists’ Forum
Second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 14h30 to 15h30

These forums provide an opportunity for constructive criticism to artists at their respective levels. Most artists work on their own, so this forum offers technical guidance and aesthetic development.
The views from art specialists together with those of the participants give feedback in a non-threatening environment. Artists’ Forums are held every second and fourth Wednesday of the month.

Tatham Reference Library

Library Times Tuesdays from 14h00 to 16h00

The Tatham Reference Library is open to art researchers on Tuesday afternoons. Reservations must be made in order to give the Gallery staff enough time to prepare the material required. Many books, pamphlets and journals in this valuable reference library relate directly to art works in the Gallery’s permanent collection. The archives section includes research resources on artists in the school curriculum.

Art Educator Training

Selected Thursdays from 12h00 to 15h00

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture, are cooperating with the Gallery to provide workshops for primary school educators in order to build up their confidence in teaching art in schools. Education Department officials ensure that different groups of educators are invited to the workshops, and generous financial assistance comes from the Department of Arts and Culture. Educators explore materials, techniques and methodology in the visual arts which can be linked to interdisciplinary classroom activities.
