Walkabouts for Schools

  • Tuesdays to Fridays 10h00-14h30

The Gallery's Education staff conduct tours of the permanent and temporary exhibitions for school groups and visitors at no cost. School tours need to be booked a week in advance and confirmed the day before. Subjects for discussion could include the Gallery collection as well as the history of the building.

Guided school group walkabouts need to be booked with the following information at hand: total number of learners, learner's grade and estimated arrival times. Bookings must be made at least a week in advance and confirmed a day before. School groups exceeding fifty will have to be divided into groups of 25. To assist the Gallery staff with control and discipline, educators need to accompany learners.

The Gallery is closed on Mondays. School group walkabouts are conducted between 10h00 and 14h30 from Tuesday to Friday.

School tours must be booked a week in advance and confirmed the day before. Late arrivals will forfeit their bookings  as Gallery staff have full programmes.

Art Classes for Young Adults

Art Classes for Young Adults
Fridays 14h00 to 16h00
Cost: R60 per month (including materials)

The Tatham Art Gallery offers art classes to enrich the youth of Pietermaritzburg and surroundings. The class runs  every  Friday  afternoon during  the  school  term. This outreach programme provides an opportunity for students who do not take art as a subject at school.

Working with permanent and temporary exhibitions helps these emerging artists to enhance and extend their knowledge of art history and theory of art. Students are encouraged to use different media in their practical work.

Participants are urged to attend the Gallery’s developmental programmes such as Artists’ Forum, art workshops and artist-in-residence programmes.

Artists' Forum

Artists’ Forum
Second Wednesday of each month from 14h30 to 15h30

Artists are invited to meet on the second  Wednesday of each month for art evaluation. Together with an art educator they exchange their ideas and approaches to art mediums and techniques, generating new collaborated concepts.

Most artists look at this forum as a constructive criticism platform, where they get feedback in a non-threatening environment.

Outreach Programme

Art Classes with Mental Health Clients
Buxton Workshop
Pietermaritzburg Mental Health Society
Selected Thursdays

Since the end of last year, as part of it's outreach programme, Tatham Art Gallery staff and volunteers have conducted a number of monthly art workshops with Pietermaritzburg Mental Health Society clients at their headquarters in the centre of Pietermaritzburg. On a rotation basis, twenty enthusiastic selected participants gather at Buxton Workshop to assemble their creations.

These range from flower mandalas and greeting cards to pets made from found objects. Teachers place emphasis on each individual’s enjoyment of the process, rather than on the results achieved.
