The Education staff has put together a collection of South African artworks from the Gallery's permanent collections that are relevant to the National Matric Visual Art Syllabus.

Four display spaces in the Gallery have been set aside for this exhibition which spans a century of South African art: the Foyer, the Main Exhibition Room, the Main Stairwell and the Ceramics Room. The themes cover contemporary art, crafts and applied art, the search for an African identity in South African art, the emerging black voice, politics and resistance art, and art and the spiritual realm.

Viewers are reminded that the themes are not mutually exclusive, and that more examples can be found in other display areas. The Tatham Shop is also well stocked with examples of contemporary craft. To further assist learners, a research centre has been set up where copies of documents from the Gallery's history files on relevant artists can be viewed by appointment.
