'Chickenman' Mkhize Memorial Exhibition

Lovers of the off-beat, idiosyncratic humour of popular Pietermaritzburg artist Fanozi 'Chickenman' Mkhize can view a memorial exhibition of his delightful work at the Tatham Art Gallery until 31 March 1996. The "Chicken Man" Mkhize Memorial Exhibition at the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg shows an interesting range of the offbeat work created by this artist.

Although it is a small exhibition which has only been drawn from the collections of the major local municipal art galleries, the co-ordinators were surprised at the number of works that were available.

"It just makes you wonder how much of Chickenman's work is out there," said Kobus Moolman of the Tatham, "and if we threw the net out much wider - what a marvellous exhibition we would have!"

'Chickenman', who became an unofficial artist-in-residence at the Gallery, sold his cow-hide and wire animals and his famous version of street signs to avid collectors from this country and overseas.

He died in March last year (1995). To assist his family a firm of local auctioneers have agreed to auction the remaining signs from his estate at their special sale on March 25. These are the last available works by 'Chickenman'.
