You may not know the artist but you may know the work. Isaac Sithole is responsible for the artwork which decorates the central food court at the Liberty Midlands Mall. These murals are enlargements of his colourful woodcut prints.
Isaac makes his prints with a colour reduction woodcut technique which he discovered while working as a professional woodcarver producing sculpture. This involves cutting away at the woodblock each time a new colour combination is printed. He makes small editions and uses glowing colour combinations to depict the message and mood of the print.
Inspired by daily and cultural events in the lives of village people, Isaac is sensitive to cultural and historical events such as the floods in Mozambique. His works are populated by animals and people in vibrant colours and flowing motions.
Isaac was born in 1974 in Maputo, Mozambique. He was raised in a family with no artistic background, but this did not discourage him from following his dream of becoming an artist. At the age of 12, Isaac started learning the art of woodcarving through other wood carvers in his area.
