Art Classes

Youth Art Classes cater for young people irrespective of previous knowledge. Students are taught to use different media and emphasis is placed on art vocabulary. Regular visits to the Gallery are encouraged in order to develop art appreciation.
Classes are conducted on Friday afternoons by Education officers Thulani Makhaye and Pinky Madlabane-Nkabinde.

Art Classes are part of the gallery's outreach programme designed to assist and to bring art awareness to young people (14-24 years) within the Msunduzi Municipality. The need for art classes became obvious with frequent requests and queries about informal art schools in the city centre, where youth can go to improve their skills or learn more about making art.
Gallery art classes teach and nurture basic skills for Msunduzi youth and introduce art vocabulary. The classes also encourage young people to have their work reviewed by other established artists in the Artists' Forum.
The students are trained mostly in observation using still life and figure drawing. Different media are used in the exercises ranging from pencil to acrylic and water colours. Landscape drawing is done in the Gallery grounds outside the church building, between the Gallery and Church Street. We hope that this year students from the art class will take part in the winter holiday Workshops at the Centre for Visual Art.
